Working full time comes with a LOT of challenges.
You’ll be perpetually tired, gain weight, feel your social life slipping away…
Just kidding, it’s not that bleak.
But 40+ hours a week is a lot of time.
When you were in school, or just not working as much, there was room in your schedule to keep dancing.
Yes, it was difficult, but being on a team or taking class a few nights a week wasn’t unthinkable.
Now, it’s a challenge just to stay awake when it hits 10 pm.
And if the work you do is stressful, the mental strain makes it hard to keep dancing, too.
But with anything, you CAN make it happen – if you want it enough.
Here are 6 ways to keep dancing even as you’re “adulting”!
1. Remind yourself that you DO have time to dance
“I don’t have time for it” really just means “it’s not a priority.”
No matter how busy you are, everyone has a few spare hours – or can make it by sacrificing something else.
Have you stayed up til 4 am talking to your crush even though you had to wake up for class at 7 the next morning?
You didn’t necessarily have spare time, but you made spare time. Because BAE was a priority Before Anything Else, including sleep.
Take a look at your weekdays – getting off of work at 5 or 6 pm gives you around 5+ hours before you go to bed.
What are you doing in that time? Going out to eat? Binge-watching Game Of Thrones??
Use that time to dance! Plenty of people have passion projects and hobbies outside of their careers.

2. Find dance studios that offer classes later in the evening
Obviously, you can’t take the classes that take place during the day, but a lot of studios do offer classes that start later.
Using studios in the LA area as examples, both Millennium Dance Complex and Snowglobe Perspective have their last classes at 9 pm, and Movement Lifestyle’s last class is at 9:30 pm.

So from the time you clock out, til 9-9:30 pm, you have different class slots to choose from.
Sometimes, I like to take class immediately after work, grab dinner, go home, and chill.
Or, I go home first, chill, go take class, then knock out as soon as I get home and shower.
It really depends on your preference, but the point is that you definitely can design your post-work hours to allow for dance!
3. Make dance a passion project
As you grow older, you start to realize how valuable your time is.
While many of us have no problem doing things for the sake of enjoying it, a lot of us don’t want to spend time on anything that doesn’t have a clear objective.
Taking class is fun, of course, but if you want to set a more personal standard for “accomplishment,” come up with a passion project!
For example: make a concept video! It’ll challenge you to be artistic in more ways than just dance. It’s an exercise in storytelling, choreography, costume design, video shooting and editing, and even digital marketing.
Getting a small project together for a performance is another idea.
It’s also a great excuse to have a mini-reunion with your fellow alumni.
You could even train in freestyle and enter a battle.
There are so many goals you can set for yourself as a dancer. So make a plan and enjoy the process!

4. Let go of past standards
There’s no getting around it – when you’re working, you will still dance… but not in the exact same capacity as you did before.
It’s heartbreaking to think that you won’t be hanging out with teammates at 3 am for most of the week or that your training progress won’t look like a graph of exponential growth.
Remind yourself that some things in your life need to slow down for other parts to speed up.
And if that “other part” is your career, then that’s a pretty worthy investment.
You must accept that your lifestyle will change.
Not just in this specific phase of transition, but constantly.
Be okay with dancing how you can, not how you used to.

5. Find or create your own community
The dance community will always support you.
But as you become less actively involved in it, it’s important to keep or create a sub-community for yourself.
For example, the immediate squad may be your teammates anymore, but maybe it’ll be the alumni who get together to support them during hell weeks and competitions.
It may be your roommates that you convince to go take class with you. It may even be an online community!
Sharing stories, tips, progress, people to keep you accountable, to celebrate together, grow together..
No matter who it ends up being, your “dance community” is so important.
